 food & lodging

Updated 4/08 - menu posted

Food Several people who've purchased the meal plan have mentioned the "camp atmosphere" and "community" they felt, eating together in the camp dining hall. Throughout the weekend, musicians spontaneously provided music during mealtimes.

This year's meal plan begins with Saturday breakfast and includes an extra meal (Sunday lunch) as well as bottled water with every meal. There will not be a Friday potluck. You'll specify your food and lodging choices when you register. Once again, Saturday's bag lunch may be separately ordered so you can eat it wherever you happen to be, or you may choose to eat lunch on your own.

The menu is designed to please vegetarians and also includes meat dishes. Vegans should plan on bringing their own food at least to supplement what we offer; Krogers and super Wal-Mart are nearby. Of course, you may bring your own food if you like. There are also good restaurants in and near Fayetteville, 4 miles away. Scroll down below the following menu for info.

Offsite food - a few nearby suggestions

To get to Fayetteville from Whitewater Whirl:
Leave the park and continue till the road ends at a T (Rt. 16). Turn right onto Rt. 16 and go 4 miles uphill to the light at US-19. Cross the highway and you're now on Court Street, the main drag. head up into town. There's a money machine at the Fayette County Bank, just ahead on your left. The following three restaurants are on or just off Court Street.

In downtown Fayetteville: Good food at all these places. Downtown: Cathedral Cafe - Breakfast, lunch, and also dinner on the weekends. Good food, full coffee bar, no alcohol, good desserts, inexpensive to moderate, great ambiance, popular with both the outdoor crowd and local bizness types. The vegetable panini sandwich is hard to beat, and I'm not a vegetarian. 574-0202. Gumbo's Cajun Restaurant - I've liked everything I've had there. Good beer. 574-4704. Pies and Pints Pizzeria - Gourmet, thin-crust pizzas, salads, sandwiches and good microbrews. Heading up the hill from the US-19 light, pass the 1st light and turn right at the 2nd; it's just a little way down the street on the left. 574-2200. Sedona Grille - A little more expensive, but considered the best evening dine-out. Continue along Court St. through downtown and proceed out of town - what, maybe a mile?  It's on the right and you can't miss it. 574-3111.

Finally, Daniel's Market is a small grocery store; turn right at either of the two downtown stoplights, go one block, and you're there.

Nearby: Chetty's Pub at Class VI River Runners -  Appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, hand-cut fries. Watch the video of the latest raft trip on the big screen with those that experienced it first-hand. Located on the Gorge rim. Deck has a great Gorge view. From the Whirl, turn right onto 16 and drive to US-19. Cross the median and turn left (N). Cross the big bridge, and take your second left, onto Ames Heights Road. You're close; just follow the signs. 574-0704.
